This year's race is shaping up to be even more intense than last year's nail-biting conclusion, where two boats, Claytime and Bull Pen, finished with identical point totals, forcing a tiebreaker based on time. Claytime, owned by Jon Clay and captained by Phillip Fender, secured the title with a sailfish caught at 12:03 p.m. on July 19, 2025, while Bull Pen, owned by Todd Wigfield and captained by Cordes Lucas, reached the same score at 2:47 p.m. on the same day with a blue marlin release. This year, Star Fish, owned by Star Fish Marine LLC and captained by Randy Estes, leads with 7,075 points, followed closely by Claytime with the same score. Star Fish has released six blue marlin and 17 sailfish this season, while Claytime has released five blue marlin, one white marlin, and 19 sailfish. The top 10 boats include Rascal, Game On, Bull Pen, Viking 64, Mister Pete, 56 Freeman, Redemption, and Bench Mark. The 2025 Edisto tournament saw 42 entries release 17 blue marlin and 104 sailfish, contributing to the overall excitement. The Governor's Cup boats have been active since 2026, releasing 83 blue marlin, 11 white marlin, and 258 sailfish, with the last weigh-in in 2022 during the Georgetown Blue Marlin Tournament. The lady angler standings are led by Cynthia Starosta aboard Star Fish, followed by Kirsten Jennings aboard Micabe and Holly McAlhany aboard Sweet Spot. The top youth anglers are Ford Schlicksup, Julia Gressette, and Reef Simmons, with Undue Risk, Man Cave, and Rare Breed, respectively. In the meatfish categories, Joe Kehoe's Legal Holiday leads with a dolphin catch, Stratton Pollitzer's On The Hook has the top wahoo, and John Waite aboard Bellabroka holds the tuna record. The Carolina Kingfish Classic, set for August 7-8, will be held out of Charleston Harbor Marina, with registration and a kickoff party on August 7, followed by the main event on August 8. Bassmaster Magazine's 2026 list of America's 100 Best Bass Lakes ranks Santee Cooper Lakes at No. 4, with Clear Lake, Lake J.B. Thomas, St. Lawrence River, Lake St. Clair, Lake Fork, Lake Tohopekaliga/Kissimmee Chain, O.H. Ivie Lake, Withlacoochee River/Lake Rousseau, and Caney Break Reservoir making up the top 10. In the Southeastern Division, Santee Cooper is No. 1, Lake Murray is No. 5, Clarks Hill is No. 14, and the Cooper River is No. 18. Red drum regulations have been updated, limiting recreational anglers to one red drum per person per day and a boat limit of two per day. The slot limit for red drum has been adjusted to between 18 and 25 inches, and non-offset/non-stainless circle hooks are required for gamefish with large hooks. These changes aim to rebuild the red drum population in South Carolina, which has been a popular inshore fish.
